We have been hearing more and more on this topic and it is certainly one worth paying attention to but what does D&I really mean for business?
Beyond the jargon, the notion of D&I is actually the “bundling” of a number of practices to strengthen your organization and also ensure good corporate citizenship and a reflection the dynamics of the communities we serve.
Over the coming weeks we will take a peek at these concepts and briefly introduce them to the conversation.
Let’s start with Diversity.
Diversity- The Oxford Languages definition of diversity is “the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.”
The idea of true diversity goes well beyond the surface level of ensuring that your company has a strong representation of minority groups or those groups indicated in employment equity statistics. Of course, ensuring that your dealership does have that representation is a good thing, but diversity also includes diversity of experience, perception, education, skills, interests and talents.
A great diversity strategy starts with knowing where your dealership currently stands (yes, this includes a measurement of metrics and statistics) and then builds on that. A diversity strategy can be designed to overcome a shortfall OR to build on an existing strength, or both! It can also be part of a greater D&I strategy that speaks to both diversity and inclusion.
