As we start 2024, we are looking to improve communication with our members. Our overarching goal is to reduce the frequency with which you receive emails from us, while still ensuring you receive timely information. As a result, you will start to notice some changes to the newsletter and email updates that we send.
We have consolidated our Training and Events bulletins so that they will be delivered to you each Thursday. Each bulletin will include some general information, features profiling our courses, and the full list of upcoming industry events and training. Please take a few moments each week to review training opportunities for you and your staff.
We want to hear from you. A new communications email address has been set up - comms@mdaalberta.com - to receive your feedback, stories and for advertisers to contribute articles and their monthly ads.

The 2023-24 Q2 (July-September) report has been released by AMVIC. A total of 57 inspections were conducted, with mixed results. You will note that there are still a significant number of issues with Sales above Advertised Price. AMVIC issued a consumer bulletin about all-in pricing, which is the law in Alberta. It further advised consumers, “As all-in advertised pricing is the law, all automotive businesses are required to follow the general codes of conduct. These codes of conduct are legal requirements in Alberta.” Ensure you are following the regulations, and if you need assistance or more information, please contact the MDA office.

Securing a Safe Start in 2024: Navigating New Year's Risks and Protecting Your Assets.
As we kick off the new year, it's crucial for us to stay abreast of the challenges facing our industry. Recent reports from the Alberta Motor Association have sounded an alarming note—vehicle thefts in our province have surged by 17%, with an average of 57 vehicles disappearing daily. This statistic should serve as a stark reminder of the need for heightened security measures at car dealerships.
Especially in cold weather, the risk is heightened as motorists inadvertently leave keys in unlocked, idling vehicles. Shockingly, approximately 50% of all stolen vehicles in Alberta are taken with the keys left inside. The implications of vehicle theft extend beyond mere inconvenience; stolen vehicles are often employed in more serious crimes such as break-ins and robberies. To safeguard our communities, we must collectively take action to curb auto theft.

Do you treat workplace fatigue as a hazard?
Although this has been an issue since formal workplaces have existed, the current labour shortages and compliance environment are shining new light on a long-standing issue- fatigue in the workplace.
Workplace fatigue increases the likelihood of workplace incidents and injuries. Some of the key areas that are impacted include reduced reaction time, poor judgement, and lack of vigilance. These can have major productivity impacts as well as health and safety risks.
Just like any other risk, fatigue in the workplace should be managed and assessed. This includes ensuring that you have done a hazard assessment and have appropriate controls, policies, and procedures in place to mitigate the risks of workplace fatigue.
